Dick Veale of San Clemente is living proof that you can save a life – and maybe more – by having a dot placed on your driver's license declaring that you want your organs donated when you die.
In 2007, Veale was in desperate need of a heart and liver transplant. A 28-year-old man in South Dakota fell off a roof and died. Today, Veale is a living testimonial as cities around Orange County observe April as DMV/Donate Life Month.
On Tuesday, Veale stood before the San Clemente City Council and told his story, flanked by teenagers Lexi Saba and Isabelle White of San Clemente High School's Be a Hero, Become a Donor Club.
"I wasn't supposed to make it to Christmas, and I had my transplant on Nov. 3, 2007," Veale said. "Every day, every round of golf, every set of tennis is wonderful."
