NEWARK — Anita Fiddemon’s 21-year-old grandson, Jamaal Perry, died after a shot to the head in Newark’s Saint Peter’s Park in October 2009.
But despite her grief, when doctors asked if she would donate his organs, she did not hesitate to do so.
Some of her thoughts were for her 47-year-old daughter, Donna Perry, who is on dialysis and could use a kidney transplant.
"I feel if I can help somebody, maybe somebody will help me," Fiddemon said.
But her decision is in the minority in New Jersey, where organ donation compares poorly with other states.
More than 42 percent of U.S. drivers are registered organ donors. But only 31 percent of New Jersey drivers are registered, ranking it 41 out of 50 states.
Although New Jersey’s move to digital licenses a few years ago increased the number of donors, state officials still hope to raise New Jersey’s ranking.
