EL PASO - Hundreds gathered at the Airport Wyndham hotel Sunday to celebrate the life of an organ donor who saved four lives after his death.
The Southwest Transplant Alliance honored the life of Dustin Pesewonit, a 29-year-old Mescalero New Mexico man, who died after being assaulted in 2008. His grandmother donated his organs after his death.
"She was so immediately ready to donate, she didn't hesitate and that's what made it so amazing," said Cynthia Chavez, a Family Services Coordinator with Southwest Transplant Alliance.
Pesewonit's heart saved the life of a 29-year-old man and his kidneys saved the lives of two others. April Dilworth, who traveled from Tyler, Texas to attend the celebration, received his liver.
"He's my hero and I owe my life to him," Dilworth said.
Dilworth was supposed to meet Pesewonit's grandmother Viola Morgan in person Sunday, but she was unable to travel because of illness. Instead, Dilworth and Morgan spoke on the phone for the first time ever.
