Race 4 Life Scavenger Hunt promotes organ donation

Wausau Daily Herald | Keith Uhlig

If you see people doing strange things Saturday -- men wearing prom dresses or someone shaving her head -- don't worry. Chances are they're just trying to save lives.

The North Central Wisconsin Donate Life group will hold its sixth annual Race 4 Life Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, a four-hour fundraising competition that sends teams of people scurrying around the Wausau area to find items and complete a series of wacky or daring tasks. The fundraiser also includes a dinner at The Rose Garden.

The competition has elements of slapstick, but its intent is deeply serious. The organizing group is dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of organ, blood, tissue and stem cell donations, and many of its members are recipients of transplanted organs. It uses the money from the fundraiser to buy materials to spread the word, but also to help the University of Wisconsin Hospital's Organ Procurement Organization and the Restoring Hope Transplant House in Madison, which gives family members of transplant patients a place to stay.
