Jim Rivard will celebrate his 64th birthday next month.
He probably would not have lived to see the day had he not received a heart from organ donor Timothy Somers, whose death saved his life.
It is a tale of two hearts that tells of how organ donation brought together a life lost, a life regained, a grieving mother and a thankful man.
More than 100,000 people nationwide are waiting for life-saving organ transplants – 1,600 in the Northwest and 225 in Montana, according to LifeCenter Northwest and Donate Life Northwest, organizations dedicated to organ and tissue donation.
Last year, organ donors saved 52 lives in the region, including 19 in Montana.
