As you may know, Gov. Rick Snyder recently signed a law overturning Michigan's long-standing helmet requirement for motorcycle operators in the state. Operators 21 or older will be allowed to ride without helmets if they purchase at least $20,000 of insurance and complete safety training.
To vastly understate the case, this is controversial. Motorcycle groups, notably Michigan's chapter of American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE), have lobbied vigorously to have the mandatory helmet rule overturned for decades on grounds that, among other things, it was costing Michigan economic opportunities because out-of-state bikers avoided the state.
With equal fervor, groups like AAA Michigan, the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan, the Insurance Institute of Michigan and Michigan Auto Law oppose the new law, arguing it will increase fatalities on Michigan's highways.
