They call it a "transplant chain."
It starts when one person's act of selflessness leads to a life-saving organ donation.
Then, that donation leads to another... and so on.
Sunday in Bloomington six people who formed a "chain gang" like this all came together for the very first time. Three were donors, and three were transplant recipients. Two were from South Dakota, four from Minnesota. Four adults, two kids.
And plenty of emotion.
The meeting took place at the DoubleTree Hilton during a National Kidney Foundation fundraiser. When 8-year-old Zach Elsenpeter was called to the podium, it was a short walk; the journey preceding it, however, had been endless for Zach and his mom Stacey.
For years, the Elsenpeters have been desperately searching for a new kidney for Zach, to no avail. More than 1,200 people were tested to find a match. "It was like looking for a needle in a haystack," Stacey said.
