Truckee leads in most drivers agreeing to donate organs

Sacramento Bee | Bill Lindelof

Truckee leads the way in drivers agreeing to donate organs for transplant.

A ceremony today at the Truckee Department of Motor Vehicles field office marks the town ranking first in the state when it comes to the percentage of drivers checking "yes" to organ and tissue donation.

Only about 26 percent of licenses statewide check yes. The Truckee field office has 53 percent answering in the affirmative.

"Truckee is proud to be leading California for the rate of people saying yes to donation," said Mayor Joan DeRyk Jones. "It's about giving life."

The Sacramento field office on Broadway had a 25 percent sign-up rate and the office in South Sacramento had a donor donation rate of 23 percent.

Jones encouraged other state residents to sign up on the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry through the DMV or online at: donateLIFEcalifornia.org.

About 113,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list. More than 20,000 live in California, according to a press release from Sierra Donor Services.
