Wilmington infant undergoes heart transplant surgery Friday

Star News | Jim Ware
Hannah Dombrowski, the 5-month-old Wilmington girl who had been awaiting a heart transplant since Feb. 23, went into surgery at 3 p.m. Friday at Duke University Hospital, according to an email from Kathy Mays, Hannah’s grandmother.

“Want to let everyone know that Hannah got a heart today,” Hannah’s mother Audrey Dombrowski posted on the Facebook group Prayers for Hannah Dombrowski.

Mays said the surgery began a few hours after a heart suitable for transplant was found, and the procedure could last from six to 12 hours.

Mays said she was at the hospital with Hannah’s parents, David and Audrey.

Hannah was one of three children younger than year on the waiting list for a heart transplant in North Carolina.

Her father had said she was given 1A status – the top priority for a heart transplant.
