
Two days after he flies into town this week in a private jet on loan from his pal Dr. Phil, David Foster will be living the dream.
The Victoria native and 16-time Grammy Award winner, who once said he'd love to be the inaugural act at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, will finally take the stage. Of course, his friend Rod Stewart beat him to it as the centre's opening act in 2005, poking fun at still-visible signs of construction by wearing reflective vests and hard hats onstage.
Ironically, Foster was producing a Christmas album with the British rocker in Los Angeles when he took time out to reflect on his longtime desire to perform at the old "barn on Blanshard," where as a kid, he used to skate and watch lacrosse games.
When Foster later went to see friend Bryan Adams perform at the old Memorial Arena's reincarnation, his yearning intensified.
"I thought it was so cool that I was back in my hometown in this beautiful arena," recalled the musician, whose dream will be fulfilled May 26 when the David Foster Foundation's 25th anniversary Miracle Concert roars to life. "It was a little beat up, shall we say, 50 years ago, but I thought it'd be cool to play there someday and here we are."
