Twelve years ago, Shelly Morell was afraid her mother wouldn't live long enough to see her children grow up. Carol Mancini had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema before being placed on the lung transplant list. Mancini received a transplant in 2001, and she and her daughter were introduced to life post-transplant - a life full of questions about paying for the ongoing medical care and high-cost medications required to maintain an organ transplant.
Together, they launched Second Chance at Life. Today, the organization hosts fundraising events throughout the year to raise money to help transplant patients with medical and other related expenses. Events are open to the general public and two are coming up this summer.
