Sandra "Sandy" Duffy of Braintree was honored as a member of the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women’s 2012 class of Unsung Heroines.
Sate Representative Mark Cusack, a Braintree Democrat, recommended Duffy for this recognition because of her work with Donate Life and her role as the chairwoman of Braintree’s AARP Committee.
Duffy was honored with the other Unsung Heroines for her outstanding contributions in a ceremony on May 16, in the Great Hall at the State House in Boston.
Duffy is a Braintree resident who has been an active member of the community for many years. In 2000, Duffy suffered the loss of her son, Chris, who died suddenly of an aneurysm. Chris had been a longtime baseball coach and had touched the lives of many players over the years. Chris’s organs and tissues were donated to over 20 people.
Since her son's death, Duffy has been extremely active in spreading awareness of organ and tissue donation. She has worked with the Registry of Motor Vehicles to ensure that employees are educated on the topic so that they can encourage drivers to sign up to be organ donors.
