Thanks to a remarkably tiny half-ounce gift, sunday will be an unforgettable first Mother's Day for Jocelyn Spurlin and her husband, Charlton.
"We were waiting for a miracle to come, and that miracle did come," said a beaming Charlton as Jocelyn nodded in agreement.
The past eight months have been an emotional roller coaster for the Spurlins, who went from the depths of anxiety to the height of boundless joy.
What Charlton calls their "spiritual journey" started last year. The Spurlins had been trying to have a baby for five years without success.
Finally, Jocelyn got pregnant. She and Charlton couldn't have been happier.
Early in her pregnancy, Charlton said he had two dreams. In one he dreamed he had a daughter; in another he dreamed he had a son. The dreams became reality.
On Sept. 9, Jocelyn delivered not one baby but two: a boy, Colin, and a girl, Malia.
"It was amazing. God gave me this vision in two different dreams. Believe it or not," Charlton said.
However, this joy was cut short about three months later when Malia began to have difficulty breathing. Her parents rushed her to Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach, where she was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscles enlarge and become unable to pump enough blood throughout the body.
