MAYVILLE - County Executive Greg Edwards is hoping to spread the word on organ and tissue donation.
The announcement in his weekly memo comes as more than 10,000 residents are on a waiting list to receive a transplant in New York state.
In fact, every 13 hours someone dies as a result of an organ donor shortage.
"April was National Donate Life Month," Edwards said, "and even though May is already upon us, many organizations throughout Western New York are still working to raise awareness about the need for organ donors and how easy it is to sign up to give the gift of life."
The county executive said Sandy Sopak, county clerk, brought an initiative to raise awareness about organ donation to the County's three Department of Motor Vehicles offices.
In a joint effort with graduate students from the University at Buffalo, the County Clerk's office surveyed almost 180 people regarding their visit to the DMV in Dunkirk, Mayville and Jamestown. The three-day campaign also sought to inform residents about the organ donation process and values of transplants.
