NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The new Facebook feature that allows people to share their organ donor status has produced an historic surge in online donor registrations, according to DCI Donor Services. Since the new feature was unveiled on May 1, online registrations in Tennessee has jumped more than 1400 percent.
“The boost in registration is unprecedented,” said Jill Grandas, corporate executive director of DCIDS. “We knew Facebook’s reach would generate awareness, but the results went far beyond expectations. We’re grateful for these newly registered organ donors who are willing to give the gift of life to those in need."
The feature lets users share whether or not they wanted to donate their organs on their timeline and explain why they wanted to be a donor.
In Tennessee alone, DCIDS says 2,500 people are on the United Network for Organ Sharing waiting list. In 2011, almost 100 men, women, and children died while waiting for a transplant.
