Fashion Celebrity Shares his Transplant Story

Northwest Kidney Centers

Most notable for his red carpet appearances, celebrity interviews and quick-wit fashion commentary Steven “Cojo” Cojocaru has become quite the personage in the fashion world. As the former fashion correspondent for the Today show and having worked at E!, Access Hollywood and Entertainment Today there is rarely a red carpet event that doesn’t feature an appearance by Cojo. However many fashion followers and Hollywood A-listers don’t realize that eight years ago he began trading in designer outfits for hospital gowns and sacrificing sit-downs for extended hospital visits as he was dealt some very unglamorous news regarding his health.

In 2004 Cojo was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) a genetic disorder that causes cysts to grow in the kidneys. Like many victims of PKD it was not discovered until he was very near kidney failure and his situation was dire.

Soon after he was diagnosed his best friend donated a kidney and Cojo underwent transplant surgery. Unfortunately the organ became infected and he lived on self-administered daily dialysis until he received a successful second transplant with a kidney donated from his 70-year-old mother in October 2005.
