Jacksonville, Florida - Hundreds of people came out to Jacksonville Landing downtown Saturday Donate Life Day Jax, a free festival geared toward signing people up to be organ donors.
Sarah Copeland is a healthy 25-year-old woman now, but a few years ago, her future wasn't so certain.
"I needed a transplant because I had congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy," she said.
Copeland was lucky -- doctors were able to find her a new heart, donated by a young man killed in a motorcycle accident.
"I'm very grateful to my donor, Sky, and his family because he wasn't an organ donor and they had to make that decision for him," she said. Without that gift, she said "I definitely wouldn't be here."
Copeland was one of the many organ recipients at the Donate Life Day Jax, working hard to get others to consider giving the gift of life. While there was a lot of fun and festivities, the focus of the event was to get people to sign up to be organ donors. It's a decision that came full-circle for Greg Gaines.
