Californians are responding to Facebook's decision to allow people to share their organ donor status with friends on Facebook.
On Tuesday, the day of the Facebook announcement, 3,904 Californians signed up to be organ donors with the organ donor registry. That was a gigantic jump from Monday, when 75 people signed up statewide.
And the spike continues today, said Charlene Zettel, chief executive officer of Donate Life California, the nonprofit agency that administers and manages the organ and tissue registry for the state of California.
"Facebook provides us with a doorway to the young generation that all uses social media for their communications," Zettel said.
The reaction has been a real boost, said Tony Borders, communications specialist with California Transplant Donor Network.
