In 1997, longtime Big Bear residents Dan and Shirley Mason experienced a parent’s worst nightmare—the loss of a child.
But now, 15 years later, the family continues to honor the life of their daughter Nicole as well as the lives she helped save through the donation of her organs.
On April 28, the Masons were joined by nearly 20 family members and friends at the 10th Annual Donate Life Run/Walk, which was held in Fullerton. It featured more than 11,000 participants, making it the largest event of its kind in the nation.
The Masons, who receive team donations and sponsorships from Big Bear businesses and individuals, changed their name this year from Heart and Soul to Team Nikki. It was the seventh time the family participated in the event. What made it even more special was that they were chosen to be one of 10 families to release baskets of doves during the opening ceremonies.
“We felt honored, not just for our family but Nicole as well,” Dan Mason said before the event. “We want to keep her memory alive, and now, thousands of people will know about her and why we’re there each year.”
