MILWAUKEE - At least 10 people in desperate need of an organ transplant die before they reach the top of the transplant list.
But after a recent WISN 12 News story about a Campbellsport family's gift of live, an investigation may have turned up a way to increase the odds of receiving an organ.
WISN 12 News introduced you to Griffin Helsten a few weeks ago. The 9-year-old received a new heart thanks to the family of Katie Berg, one of three Campellsport High School students killed in a car accident this past winter.
And while Helsten is one of the lucky ones who received an transplant, 12 News has learned of an organization working to increase the odds of transplant by offering those on the organ donor list the first chance.
Nashville-based LifeSharers is trying to improve the odds by creating their own registry based on the concept that organs should first be offered to people who themselves are registered organ donors.
Jim Westphal of Pewaukee said organ donation isn't top of mind for him, but he does feel more peace-of-mind as a member of the LifeSharer program.
As a member of the program, Westphal has pledged that his organs would first go to a LifeSharers member, even if there is someone on the national list that is in a greater need.
