HUDSON --- Students and staff of the Hudson School District gathered around the stone benches at Hudson Elementary School, remembering a fallen classmate.
Bodee Lane Peterson, 9, died in a water-skiing accident last August, just a day before he was to start fourth grade.
His classmates memorialized him in a poem called "My Memory Library," holding heart-shaped red balloons they had intended to release before the helium leaked out of them.
"Although Bodee didn't walk the halls with us this year, he is here in spirit," said Hudson Elementary School principal Mark Schlatter.
Kathy Young, a spokeswoman for Bodee's family, led the students and teachers in prayer.
"Whenever any of us comes to this beautiful spot, may we not only remember Bodee and all of his goodness, but may we remember you, God," she said.
Another woman led the audience in singing an Irish blessing song.
