Kelowna kid Ashlyn Lang, who suffers from a life-threatening disease and needs a new liver, is getting one — all the way from New Zealand.
The three-year-old is getting the new organ courtesy of her half-sister Allison Lang, 21, who lives in New Zealand and has made the trip to Canada for the June 11 operation in Edmonton.
Lisa Lang, Ashlyn’s mom, has mixed emotions.
“I’m incredibly relieved and incredibly scared for both the girls,” said Lang Thursday. “It’s very, very nice. It’s a beautiful gift, for sure.”
But the gift, which will address the Tyrosinemia Type 1 disease that threatens Ashlyn’s life, was understandably difficult to acquire.
A local friend of the Langs, Julienne Quesnel, had earlier embarked on a weight-loss regime to become a suitable donor of part of her liver — which is all that little Ashlyn would require. Quesnel was getting close to her goal but the decision was made to go with a better match, Ashlyn’s half-sister.
Allison Lang is the daughter Ashlyn’s father Corrie had in a previous relationship. The two siblings know each other from regular visits. While Allison was a good match, there was yet another complication.
