New Technology Helps Woman Get New Heart
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- A Portsmouth woman recently became the first person in New England to receive a new type of experimental heart transplant.
Amy DeStefano, 40, received what's become known as a "heart in a box." The mother of two needed a transplant after a virus damaged her heart in 2009. She then began a long wait on the transplant list.
And that was hard because I wasn't able to bring the kids to school, pick them up, walk around the neighborhood, and I would fold laundry and I would have to take a break," she said.
"She used to lay in her bed a lot and sleep, so we couldn't really do anything with her," said her son, Aleks Kuchtey.
"I was really scared because, well, I was in second grade and now I'm in fourth, but my dad picked me up from school and took me to the hospital and said that there is something wrong with my mom's heart, and it was really scary," said her daughter, Tatiana Kuchtey.
