Non-profit excited about Facebook's organ donation campaign

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -A Mississippi non-profit agency that champions organ donation is thrilled to now be getting a helping hand from a social media giant. Starting on Tuesday, Facebook's one billion users worldwide can share if they are an organ donor and also find links to donor registries.

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency said the need for organs donors is especially high in our state. Officials said the reason is that Mississippi ranks among near the top for hypertension and diabetes. At any one time there are between 800 and 1,000 Mississippians on a transplant waiting list.

The South Mississippi Family Donor quilt is dedicated to people who, after passing away, gave the gift of live. One patch is dedicated to 18 year old Colin Orr of Hattiesburg. Just a few weeks before his high school graduation, he fell off a moving truck and died.

"His mother just recently received news that approximately 55 lives have been saved through tissue donation and possibly more than that," said Anna Jacobs, Family Care Specialist for MORA.

Jacobs goes to hospitals across South Mississippi giving families who are facing the death of a loved one information about organ donation. Officials said nationwide 114,000 people are waiting for transplants but each year there are only about 14,000 living and deceased donors. So every day, 18 people die waiting.
