Bay State champions of organ donation praised Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for trying to increase the number of registered donors nationwide and reported an upswing in activity yesterday after the social networking billionaire’s public appeal.
“As an active Facebook user myself, I thought it was fantastic,” said Laura Dempsey, spokeswoman for the Waltham-based New England Organ Bank. “All facts point to this is the right thing to do. At the end of the day, it’s going to save lives.”
A new tool on users’ Facebook timelines allows them to share their organ donor status with friends through stories and visuals. Users who are not registered can access a link to the donor registry in their state.
