STUDY FOCUSES ON REJECTED ORGAN DONOR REQUESTS

Yahoo News

The University of Canberra is looking into into why Australian families are turning down organ donation requests despite the wishes of the deceased.

According to national statistics, up to half of Australian families turn down the opportunity to donate their deceased relatives' organs even if that goes against their wishes.

Holly Northam, a researcher at the university, says conducting research into why Australian families decline donation requests is vital to improving organ donation rates.

"There has been some study in Australia around families who have agreed but there's not a lot of qualitative work in that area," she said.

"So it's possibly reflecting the fact that we haven't done this research, [it's] maybe part of the reason we've got the donation rate we've got."

Ms Northam says there are significant factors as to why this research has not been conducted in the past.

"It's difficult, there's a fear about approaching families that have made that decision," she said."The ethical challenges of getting through ethics committees to approach the subjects is considered daunting."
