PINEWOOD, SC - In one of the smallest towns in the state where only around four hundred people live is a woman whose story goes far beyond the town she grew up in. Sarah Mathis describes herself as a country girl.
She’s married with two kids.
She always lived a pretty healthy life or so she thought.
In 2011 Mathis went to her family doctor for a check up.
“My family doctor had told me that I had a lot of protein in my urine,” Mathis said.
She didn't think much of it until a few weeks later when the doctor called her back in.
Both of her kidneys were failing
“It’s a hard situation but there's so much you have to face,” Mathis said. “If I didn't have [my daughter Stephanie] there with me I don't know how I would have reacted,” she said.
“I was devastated,” Stephanie said. “To hear something like that it’s just something that you would see on TV or read about.”
