
Social media giant, Facebook, lets you share almost everything, including your name, birthday and relationship status. Now, you can share... your organs.
This feature launched Tuesday and well over 100,000 people have already declared themselves organ donors on their profile page.
Thousands have made it "Facebook official," including 89 here in Nevada.
"That's exciting for us," said Wendy Knorr of the California Transplant Donor Network. "From a community education standpoint, we just want to know that people are out there talking about it."
This is big news for donor groups nationally because across the country, there are 113,000 people waiting for an organ donation.
"The problem is that we don't have enough registered donors," said Knorr. "So, there's a huge gap and everyday, that gap widens."
Even though it may be "Facebook official," nothing is truly official just yet. Through Facebook, you also have to fill out a form confirming your decision.
For donors in our area, that form is sent to the Nevada State Donor Registry.
