Vikki Tulcas has repeated the lines often over the past few years — too often.
“My job depended on the organ donor program. Now my life depends on it,” she said Tuesday at Pekin Hospital.
Tulcas, education coordinator for the Illinois Secretary of State’s organ and tissue donation program, visited the hospital with her boss, Secretary of State Jesse White, and Jeff Govednik of Delavan, who’s had the good fortune Tulcas hopes for.
The trio joined hospital CEO Kevin Andrews at a news conference to promote the organ and tissue donor program that White has built to one of the largest of its kind in the nation, but which they said isn’t big enough yet.
About 5.6 million of the state’s estimated 13 million residents are registered as participants in the donor program through White’s office, but that’s not enough, he said. He’s traveling through the state to encourage the next generation of adults to sign onto the program once they reach age 18.
