His mother, Madam Ruhana Talib, did everything she could to take care of him, even donating her kidneys to him, reported The Star.
Mr Mohd Ghazali Ismail, 28, was just nine when he was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a disease which ravaged his kidneys.
He spent most of the next 13 years in hospital and being attached to dialysis machines.
Madam Ruhana tells The Star: "My son was so weak from the endless treatments, he could barely move."
She adds that Mr Ghazali needed to go through dialysis four times a day, with each session lasting two hours.
He didn't even have the strength to open his eyes.
Says Madam Ruhana: "I would read his textbooks to him by his hospital bed so that he could be ready for his examinations."
She recalls sleeping on the hospital floor when she was by his side, but seeing her son suffer pained her more.
