A barrister killed by a motorcyclist saved or improved the lives of five people through donating her organs, her mother revealed today.
Marina Catovsky, 47, died after she was hit while crossing the road at London Bridge in June last year. Perry Hackshaw was estimated to be travelling between 40 and 47mph in a 30mph zone.
Today her mother, Dame Julia Polak, revealed how her daughter, who lived in Ealing, had joined the organ donor scheme without her mother’s knowledge and so helped save or improve five lives, including that of a baby.
Dame Julia, 73, who benefited from organ donation herself after undergoing a heart and lung transplant 17 years ago, said despite their heartache, the family, including Ms Catovsky’s partner William, wanted some good to come from her death.
She said: “We now know, through letters and subsequent reports and follow-ups from the organ donation coordinator that the recipients of our darling Marina are alive and well.
“One lady — a recipient of Marina’s cornea — wrote to us, saying how grateful she is of having her eyesight restored and what a huge difference Marina’s gift made to her.”
