ST. JOSEPH -- Imagine being a teacher with a student whose father is extremely ill. What would you do to help? Well one local teacher has decided to ride his bike across the country.
The student's name is Brady Adams, his father, Barry Adams, is waiting for a kidney transplant. He's been sick for months, undergoes dialysis three to four times a day and is progressively getting weaker.
But there is hope for Barry Adams with a surgery planned in just a couple of weeks.
The hope for the bike ride now is that it will raise awareness to help others who have the same need.
Living with organ failure
"It all started with strep throat when he was 9-years-old," Tracy Adams, Barry Adams wife said. "He was 1 of the rare cases where the sickness attacked his kidneys." She said.
But it wasn't until his late 20's and early 30's that Barry realized the damage and it was 10 years ago that he received his first Kidney from his brother, Michael Musgrove, who died suddenly in 2010.
In 2011, that kidney also started to fail. It's been seven months since Barry realized he needed a new kidney. And everyday he gets weaker.
"I get to the point where I really can't function, it's hard to get out of bed, just hard to pretty much do anything." Barry Adams said.
