Pledges and contributions have been tabulated from the May 12 Free Throws for Life, and organizers say the effort generated more than $4,000 to help Jessica Bailey Johnson get closer to a double lung transplant.
Derek Atkinson of Tecumseh, who helpean wrote an email that as of Monday more than $48,000 had been raised through various fundraising events toward the $60,000 needed to help cover medical and incidental costs of a double lung transplant the former Tecumseh resident needs due to cystic fibrosis. Twelve people made 5,753 free throws in a 12-hour period May 12 at the Tecumseh Middle School gym.
Atkinson said Johnson is doing better, though still in need of the transplant.
“A couple of weeks ago ... the doctor said her lung function was OK and she was taken off the immediate need transplant list,” Atkinson wrote. “She still needs to have the transplant, but it is not as urgent as before.”
Family and friends have been working to raise the money to help cover the expenses when Johnson, 33, of St. Clair Shores, is at the Cleveland Clinic for the surgery. The estimated $60,000 cost covers the family’s living expenses and medical bills during the time they live in Cleveland for the transplant and for Johnson’s follow-up care.
