EVEN though former rugby league player Joe Thomas's mother Mary Touma was 72 when she died, she was still able to give a lifesaving gift to others. Her organs were able to save three people, proving that people are never too old to become organ donors.
The Organ and Tissue Authority's latest research reveals that while 81 per cent of Australians aged 65 and over say they are willing to become organ and tissue donors, 37 per cent believe they are too old to donate.
The research also showed that 49 per cent of people in that age group have not discussed their wishes with family members in the past year. Families are always asked to confirm the donation wishes of registered donors.
Mr Thomas and his family lost their mother unexpectedly during an altercation in Eastlakes two years ago. A man has been charged with her manslaughter and is before the courts.
Mrs Touma had nominated herself as an organ donor but although the family never discussed the issue, after speaking with his five siblings, Mr Thomas said they decided to respect her wishes.
