Liver wars: Fight intensifies in Memphis over allocation structure for lifesaving organs

The liver wars of Memphis are forcing longtime friends, colleagues and mentors to choose sides.

And it isn't pretty.

Each side has a logical, defensible position in an increasingly nasty tussle about how best to structure a lifesaving liver transplant program in Greater Memphis.

Good people, going at each other hammer and tongs over organ transplant protocols.

And all the while, the list of patients desperately in need of a lifesaving liver transplant only grows longer. An increase in the rate of liver damage due to the prevalence of hepatitis C, plus the ravages of alcoholism and and an aging population, will only drive up the demand for transplants.

Indeed, the liver wars of Memphis are, at some level, a matter of life and death.
