
Oak Avenue School fourth-grader Lily Blanchard has begun her career in public speaking at the tender age of 10. She shared her story of illness and recovery at the third annual NephCure Walk in San Jose Saturday.
“I’m definitely going to talk about how I was first diagnosed with the kidney disease, and how I don’t have any problems now – it seems like I’m cured,” she said prior to the event. “I’m pretty sure I’m one of the first people to outgrow this. It might be inspirational for the other kids to know that somebody has outgrown it.”
At 18 months, Lily was diagnosed with the most common form of nephrotic syndrome, an illness of unknown origin that affects the kidneys. Over the years, she’s undergone drug treatments similar to those of organ transplant patients, with side effects that caused health problems on top of the illness.
