Within the frame a document rested, emblazoned with the words, “For Valor.”
One or two stray tears fell to her cheek.
“This award fills me with emotion that I cannot express,” Ennis began. “Some of you who don’t know me ask, why? Why would I take the initiative to go through a process to see if I were an eligible candidate to donate a kidney? Well if you have the time, I will tell you.”
Ennis recounted her struggles and her sacrifice in the operation that would take one of her organs and spare the life of her friend and coworker.
One May 1, Ennis donated her kidney to comrade-in-arms Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Christy.
Christy, who suffered from genetic kidney disease, was in a fight for his life – his body having only limited use of his renal organs.
Although Christy had been placed on a donor list, medical advisors warned him that his life may be in jeopardy if a transplant were not found soon enough.
