Organ donation delays sentencing

Wigan today

A TEEN thug facing jail for a Wigan robbery has had his sentence postponed – so he can save his young cousin’s life with an organ donation.

The 12-year-old relative of Kyle Turton is seriously ill with liver problems and doctors have found that the latter, who admits a Hindley town centre mugging, is a suitable match to donate part of his liver to help save her life.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that following scans and screening two medics have approved Turton as a donor and the transplant procedure requires another doctor to agree and a routine psychiatric assessment has to be carried out.

“The overall timescale is likely to be within four to eight weeks and the recovery time is then seven days,” said his barrister Steven Swift.

The 18-year-old appeared in the dock along with an older companion for sentence after drunkenly “terrorising” a group of schoolchildren in Hindley’s Asda car park in a bid to obtain money for more alcohol.

“He has no illusions about the serious nature of the offences,” said Mr Swift, who pointed out that Turton had not mentioned his selfless generosity to his cousin to him but his parents had raised it.
