TORONTO – Eight weeks following her double lung transplant surgery in Toronto and 21-year-old Helene Campbell is now breathing on her own and enjoying the simple things in life that many take for granted.
“Standing up in the shower and tying my shoes, all these things I couldn't do before now I can do without oxygen, it's a miracle,” said Campbell.
Campbell's dramatic journey from near death to a return to health after her life-saving transplant April 6 has captured attention around the world.
The Ottawa woman has become a poster child for organ donations, driven in part by appearances on the “Ellen Show” and by an endorsement from pop idol Justin Bieber.
Her campaign is credited with a significant increase in people willing to donate their organs.
“In Ontario, every three days someone dies not having received the proper organ that they need,” explained Campbell. “We have the technology and amazing health care system and only thing lacking are organs.”
In an interview with Global’s Focus Ontario hosts Leslie Roberts and John Tory, Campbell talked exclusively about her thoughts while painfully waiting for the transplant surgery.
