The public relations war over the distribution of human organs for transplant moved to the Shelby County Commission on Wednesday for a 90-minute skirmish.
Commissioners cast a preliminary 6-0 vote in favor of two separate resolutions supporting the University of Tennessee-Methodist Transplant Institute.
It was a setback to the other side in the debate, the Mid-South Transplant Foundation, but the vote had only symbolic weight, for the County Commission has no power to regulate organ transplants.
Because of consent rules and other factors, relatively few organs are available for transplant.
Memphis currently accepts organ donations from all of Tennessee. A federal rule change would make Memphis part of a less populous area for organ distribution that includes portions of West Tennessee, East Arkansas and North Mississippi.
