The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Gibraltar has attained its charity status and is now registered charity number 229. Gibraltar’s solitary cystic fibrosis sufferer, founder and chairperson of the foundation, Rosie Fernandez, is delighted with this recognition.
Mrs Fernandez was diagnosed with the condition at only a few weeks old and her parents had to adapt their lifestyle to accommodate their newborn who had a chronic illness.
Cystic fibrosis is a recessive genetic disease, which affects the lungs critically but also other organs, namely the pancreas, liver, intestine and reproductive system. It is caused by an abnormal transport of both chloride and sodium across one of the basic types of animal tissue called epithelium, resulting in thick, viscous mucus being secreted.
