JOHOR BARU: IT was a little after 6pm on July 7 when a group, who included members of the Rotary Club of Johor Baru (RCJB), accompanied Dr Ghantan Palanisamy and his companions, as they rounded the corner from Jalan Abu Bakar to head towards Dataran Johor Baru.
About an hour prior to that, they had assembled at the Zon to join the men in the final segment of the grueling north to south trek to promote awareness of organ donation that started in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, on June 10.
A graduate of Mangalore Medical University, India, Dr Ghantan, 26, was initially accompanied by his brother, Rajan Palanisamy, a final-year Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) engineering student.
On the fourth day they were joined by Ravinder Singh, a 24-year-old USM aerospace engineering graduate.
After eight days on the walk, Rajan, 23, left to sit for his final exams. He later rejoined Dr Ghantan on his journey.
Dr Ghantan, who was wearing a cowboy hat and a T-shirt emblazoned with his motto Recyclables Inside, was upbeat about reaching the targeted 1,000 pledges for organ donation.
