Derek Brown, a 2010 Souderton High School graduate who made nine starts for East Stroudsburg University's football team in 2011, died Thursday afternoon of injuries sustained in a one-car accident Saturday morning in Telford, Montgomery County.
Brown had been in a coma at Abington Memorial Hospital since the accident, which occurred around 1 a.m. only two blocks from his home.
"This is a tragedy of the utmost magnitude for the family, the community, the school and for the kids in our program who got to know Derek," Warriors head football coach Denny Douds said.
The 20-year-old Brown, whose older brother Matt was a four-year letter winner at tight end for the Warriors (2006-07 and 2009-10), played 10 games as a linebacker and safety in 2011, making nine starts. He was fourth on the team with 73 tackles. Brown, who would've been a junior, did not participate in spring practice after undergoing shoulder surgery over the winter.
