As he withered away from a rare kidney disease 20 years ago, Jacques St. Denis thought it would be selfish to take one of his son’s kidneys to save his life.
But looking back all those years, the 67-year-old now realizes the only selfish decision would have been to leave his family behind.
His new lease on life has allowed him to raise his two sons and watch them marry and have children of their own, to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife and to do things he never thought possible when he was constrained by dialysis treatments.
Friday marked the 20th anniversary since his son Serge donated a kidney to him, just as both of his were removed.
It was a weighty decision for Serge, who was just 21 years old when he decided to go under the knife.
