The bravery shown by the parents of Thomas Kelly in talking about their decision to donate his organs may inspire others to be donors, a senior specialist says.
There's no happy circumstance that leads to it, it's almost always unexpected. So not only are you overwhelmed with grief but it's something that often you've never thought of before. It takes enormous courage for everyone concerned to bring this issue up.
Ralph and Kathy Kelly said they donated their 18-year-old son's organs "because we felt that his death should result in some life for other people".
Dr Peter Saul, medical director for organ and tissue donation at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, said the family displayed their bravery and generosity.
He said he hoped the tragedy of Thomas's death would help other families talk about organ donation.
"This is exactly what we would hope people would learn from the bravery," Dr Saul told ABC Radio this morning.
