TAMWORTH patients and hospital staff are backing a campaign for more organ donors to step forward. National Transplant Week runs between July 9 and 15, with organisers saying there is a desperate need for more organ donors in the UK, as three people die every day while awaiting a new organ.
The campaign theme for this year is 'Pass it On' – focusing not just on signing up to the register but also the importance of passing on wishes to family and friends so they are aware.
The hospitals' organ donation team will be supporting the week with a display at Sir Robert Peel community hospital where leaflets will be available for anyone wishing to join the national register.
Dr Ian Poxon, the Trust's lead for organ donation, said: "It's probably commonly known that there is a lack of organs available for transplant for those people suffering from chronic organ failure.
"For example, there are more than 6,500 people in the country waiting for a kidney transplant and most of them will have to endure some form of dialysis. This list currently includes about 90 children. Last year, only around 2,200 kidneys were transplanted into recipients. You can see how far short we fall in helping these people.
