Lincolnshire author travels the world to discover 'Olympic spirit'

An author from Lincolnshire has travelled the world in an attempt to discover the spirit of the Olympics.

Matt Roebuck, 27, from Upton, near Gainsborough, underwent a year-long journey seeking out obscure competitions and tournaments for his new book, The Other Olympics. And while none of them replicated the scale and grandeur of this year's London Games, he found the spirit of the Olympics has travelled far.

From athletes who had undergone life-saving operations at the Transplant Games, to officers of the emergency services remembering the 10th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, by holding the World Police and Fire Games in New York.

Mr Roebuck has chronicled it all in his book which took in 13 events across the globe.

"For me it is all about the community," he said.
