ABC The View
I would like to introduce myself; my name is Julie and I have lived - grew up in, and worked in Brevard County off & on since 1977. On January 17, 1991 I gave birth to the sweetest boy in the world, Jarred McKinley Carter. A mother’s worst nightmare happened on July 20, 2010, I was told that my son was at Holmes Regional Hospital with a life threatening injury. When I entered his hospital room, and saw my son, I knew that his life on earth was over. As the nurse held my hand so very tight, I looked through my tears and asked her if we could please donate his organs.
A year and half later I received a letter from retired Navy SEAL LT. Justin Legg, stating he had received both of Jarred’s lungs. In 2006 Justin was diagnosed with Leukemia and with his very severe treatments Justin’s body went through hell. At the time of my son’s death, if Justin did not have the transplant he would have died himself.
Justin is a huge advocate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through Team In Training
Since Justin’s transplant – he walked his first ½ marathon only 8 months after receiving his new lungs. He has also climbed Mt Denali (McKinley) with several other disabled veterans less than a year after receiving Jarred’s lungs. Justin is going to participate in his next half-marathon on September 2, 2012, the Virginia Beach Rock & Roll Half-Marathon. His goal is to reach $50,000.00 in donations. The reason he is trying to raise so much is that when he reaches that mark he will be allowed to name a research project funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Justin would like to name it “The Jarred McKinley Carter Project” in honor of the young man who saved his life, my son Jarred.
