Modesto Bee
The California Transplant Donor Network has awarded its Kay Huse Paying It Forward Award this year to a Manteca family. Jose and Zona Zaragoza and their family members were recognized for their volunteer work for the nonprofit that links organ and tissue donors with recipients in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
Last year, the network saved or enhanced more than 47,000 lives through organ and tissue donations. Huse, a Modesto resident, battled cystic fibrosis until she died at age 44 in 2008.
In 2005, 16-year-old Matthew Zaragoza was declared brain-dead as the result of a tackle while playing football for East Union High School in Manteca. His family decided Matthew could be a hero by donating his organs and tissues immediately, saving the lives of four others. The family, including daughters Katrina and Kristy and Matthew's grandmother, Valda Van Gelderen, all became active in promoting organ and tissue donation.
