Girl encourages residents to help others to celebrate her own heart transplant
ST. GEORGE - For 13-year-old Abby Doman, who nearly died last year after collapsing in gym class, every single day feels like a gift.
Sitting in her living room last week, preparing to go swimming with friends - something she never could have done just a few months ago - her smile told the story.
"It's great," she said. "I'm feeling good."
It hasn't been the easiest journey. After collapsing as a result of an undiagnosed heart condition, she spent months in the hospital waiting for a heart transplant and faced a number of setbacks and illnesses as she recovered.She struggled to ward off viruses because of her weakened immune system and it took months for doctors to coordinate her long list of medications. She missed most of the school year and some of her favorite pastimes - she played on the soccer team at Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School - were pretty much out of the question.
